You Won't Believe It: Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals and Samskip Ignite Revolutionary Green Shore Power Movement!

Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) and Samskip have enthusiastically rolled out their Green Shore Power project, a unique initiative aimed at curbing the CO2 emissions generated by docked vessels. The collaboration has resulted in the creation of the Netherlands' maiden shore power solution at a container terminal, located within the bustling Port of Rotterdam.

The initiative tasked Harbour Electronical Services (HES) with readying and outfitting RST's shortsea vessel – the aptly named Innovator – to receive power from the shore. Jolectra was entrusted with the installation of the onshore power supply situated on RST's quay.

The adoption of shore power within maritime circles is projected to bring down emissions by a substantial 5 megatons of CO2 annually. This represents a meaningful 3.7% slice of total global shipping emissions.

Erik Hofmeester, the Head of Fleet Management – Vessel, pointed out the myriad ways to curb CO2 emissions. He listed the utilization of bio-fuels by Samskip vessels, onboard CO2 capturing systems, WASP (Wind Assisted Ships Propulsion), and of course, the beneficial use of shore power. "The Green shore power approach ensures eco-friendly and noiseless ship operations within the ports of Rotterdam," he explained.

Hofmeester stated, "We have placed high bars for decarbonization in the years to come, setting our sights on net-zero emissions by the year 2040." Remarkably, this self-imposed deadline preempts the legally required timeline for the maritime industry by a whole decade, currently pegged for 2050. He added, "We are committed to leveraging all our resources in the pursuit of preserving the future of our company, customers, partners, and of course, our shared home, Earth."

Arno Storm, CEO of RST, expressed his pride in the company's lead role in energy transition. He noted, "RST is keen on spearheading practical solutions for energy transition in the port of Rotterdam, to benefit the Earth and cater to our customers’ needs." He added with satisfaction, "It is an honor to announce that we are the Netherlands' first container terminal with a shore power connection."
