WASHINGTON, Oct 11 - The U.S. Space Force has taken a brief pause in the utilization of web-based generative artificial intelligence tools, similar to ChatGPT, for its dedicated workforce due to data security concerns, as disclosed in a memo obtained by Reuters.

Dated Sept. 29, the memo was directed towards "Guardians," the affectionate term used to refer to Space Force personnel, and it temporarily restricts the use of AI tools, including extensive language models, on government computers. Such usage will resume once it receives formal approval from the force's Chief Technology and Innovation Office.

The memo cites the reason for this temporary suspension as "data aggregation risks."

The adoption of generative AI, driven by large language models that ingest vast quantities of historical data to acquire knowledge, has experienced explosive growth over the past year. This technological advancement has paved the way for continually evolving products like OpenAI's ChatGPT, which can rapidly generate various forms of content in response to simple prompts, such as text, images, or video.

Lisa Costa, the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of Space Force, expressed in the memo that this technology "is poised to revolutionize our workforce and significantly enhance the operational speed of Guardians."

An Air Force representative confirmed the temporary suspension, which was initially reported by Bloomberg.

In a statement, Tanya Downsworth, an Air Force spokesperson, clarified, "A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the U.S. Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these capabilities into Guardians' roles and the USSF mission. This is a temporary measure aimed at safeguarding the data of our service and Guardians."

Costa disclosed in the memo that her office has established a task force dedicated to generative AI in collaboration with other Pentagon divisions. Their mission is to explore responsible and strategic ways to harness this technology effectively.

Furthermore, Costa noted that additional guidelines regarding the Space Force's use of generative AI will be unveiled within the next month. This will pave the way for a seamless integration of this groundbreaking technology into the force's operations.
