In an exciting turn of events, Australia is leading the charge in the battery energy storage systems market, as highlighted in a Wood Mackenzie report. Meanwhile, Transgrid, one of Australia's prominent Transmission System Operators (TSOs), is set to launch a tender process to attract battery operators. Their aim? Ensuring a reliable electricity supply in New South Wales (NSW).

Transgrid is setting the stage for a competitive procurement process, aiming to secure services from fresh battery projects. The next steps involve wrapping up contracts with the successful applicants, particularly in the Bathurst, Orange, and Parkes regions, as well as broader NSW.

Identifying grid-scale batteries as a key component for reliable supply in these regions, Transgrid foresees a significant surge in electricity demand due to the burgeoning industrial sector.

Marie Jordan, Transgrid's Executive General Manager of Network, enthusiastically shared news of the battery project. According to her, this venture "represents a doubly significant leap, as grid-scale batteries emerged victorious in both regions, promising the most substantial benefits when compared to other options."

She further explained how this change in the grid will prompt them to move beyond the conventional 'poles and wires' model. They are now embracing new-age technologies and business models to cater to consumer needs and ensure grid reliability.

The plan, according to Jordan, is to purchase services from battery storage owners and operators. This innovative approach is expected to satisfy the growing demand in both regions more quickly than by merely upgrading the existing network.

She was also keen to note that the advantages presented by grid-scale batteries would open new capacity on the transmission grid. Plus, service providers can leverage these batteries to participate in the energy market during periods of non-use.
