BHP proudly commemorated the dispatch of a whopping three billion tonnes of premium iron ore to China with a grand celebration. The festivities saw key clients from China being given an exclusive tour of BHP's vast operations in Pilbara and Port Hedland, Western Australia, and a lavish party in Perth.
The vibrant occasion was graced by BHP’s top brass, Chief Commercial Officer Vandita Pant and Asset President WA Iron Ore Brandon Craig. Together with Luo Tiejun, the Vice Chairman of China Iron and Steel Association, and other significant client representatives, they inspected the Mining Area C and South Flank mining locations in Pilbara and witnessed the filling of a massive 210,000 metric tonne Capesize carrier at the Port Hedland facility. The celebration reached its pinnacle with a glittering dinner in Perth, which was attended by West Australian Premier Roger Cook, Australia’s Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King, and delegates from the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in WA. Ms. Pant shared her sentiments, noting the deep-rooted bond BHP has maintained with its Chinese clients over the last half-century. She highlighted the trust and mutual growth they’ve achieved through the consistent supply of premium iron ore and joint ventures in advancing steel production, emphasizing their shared goals for global economic progress. “We’re eager to further strengthen these ties and jointly explore groundbreaking techniques to make the steel industry greener,” she added. On this occasion, Mr. Craig expressed, “This landmark achievement holds immense significance for both BHP’s iron ore division and Western Australia. It's a joyous moment for us to both reminisce about our journey and display our top-tier WA facilities. Our commitment remains undeterred – to source and supply our esteemed iron ore resources with utmost safety, reliability, and responsibility.” A fun fact to note: BHP took nearly three decades to ship its first 100 million tonnes of iron ore to China after the inaugural delivery in 1973. But, fast forward to 2014, and the figure touched a billion tonnes. Remarkably, owing to strategic investments and the expansion of BHP’s WA Iron Ore operations, the next two billion tonnes were achieved in a mere nine years. What a feat! Source : BHP
