Major Oil Company Engages in Groundbreaking Talks with Leading Automakers - You Won't Believe What They're Discussing

On July 31, there were reports that Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), a prominent oil company, is engaging in discussions with various automakers, including Tesla (TSLA.O), Ford Motor (F.N), and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), to potentially supply lithium for electric vehicle batteries. This exciting development, as reported by Bloomberg Law, indicates a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

The talks are not limited to just automakers, as Samsung (005930.KS) and SK On Co are also part of the discussions, showing a collaborative effort from different industries to drive the electric vehicle revolution forward.

Although these discussions are at a very early stage, the fact that Exxon is considering lithium supply for electric vehicle batteries is a significant step in the right direction. It's worth mentioning that Exxon doesn't currently produce the battery metal, but they have been proactive in exploring opportunities to do so.

Reuters reported last month that Exxon had entered an agreement with Tetra Technologies Inc (TTI.N) to explore over 6,100 acres (24.7 square kilometers) in Arkansas, known to contain lithium-rich brine. Furthermore, earlier this year, Exxon acquired more than 100,000 acres in Arkansas from privately-held Galvanic Energy, signaling their growing interest in the lithium sector.

To extract lithium from these brines, Exxon will have to consider employing direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology, which, though unproven at a commercial scale, has piqued the interest of various companies seeking to lead the way in this emerging field.

In line with this expansion into the lithium sector, Exxon has been in discussions with International Battery Metals (IBAT.CD) regarding licensing DLE technology. This highlights the oil major's commitment to exploring innovative technologies that can bolster the global supply of this ultralight metal.

The involvement of traditional energy companies, like Exxon, and other players in exploring emerging technologies for sustainable energy solutions is a promising sign for a brighter and greener future. As more companies join forces and venture into the electric vehicle space, we can expect groundbreaking advancements that will contribute to the ongoing global effort to combat climate change.

Unfortunately, Tesla, Ford, and Volkswagen did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters, while Exxon has chosen to stay silent at this stage. Nevertheless, the potential collaborations between these giants in the automotive and energy sectors have sparked optimism and excitement within the industry.

In conclusion, these discussions between Exxon and automakers represent a pivotal moment in the transition towards cleaner and more eco-friendly transportation. As technology continues to evolve and traditional energy companies embrace renewable alternatives, we can anticipate a future where electric vehicles powered by sustainable lithium batteries become the norm, revolutionizing the way we travel and protect our planet.
