India's Steel Production Soars: 14.7% Growth in 2023-24

In a buoyant development, India's crude steel production has surged by an impressive 14.7 percent, reaching a substantial 69.65 million tonnes (MT) during the April-September period of the 2023-24 fiscal year, as reported by SteelMint India. This remarkable growth comes in contrast to the 61.06 MT recorded in the same period of the previous year.

This robust upturn in production can be attributed to a combination of factors, primarily an enhanced utilization of capacity and the diligent efforts of key players within the Indian steel industry, who have been scaling up their production capacities.

SteelMint anticipates that these favorable conditions will persist, continuing to bolster production growth throughout the latter half of the ongoing fiscal year.

Furthermore, there's more good news on the domestic front, as the consumption of finished steel within India has also witnessed a significant uptick, surging by an impressive 14.77 percent to reach 63.99 MT, compared to the 55.75 MT recorded during the same six-month period in the previous year.

While this domestic growth is impressive, it's important to note that the country's steel exports have experienced a slight contraction, decreasing by 10.25 percent to 3.23 MT from the 3.60 MT exported during the April-September period of 2022-23. In contrast, imports into India have seen a notable rise, reaching 2.90 MT from the 2.56 MT recorded in the year-ago period, representing a substantial year-on-year increase of 13.33 percent.

Contributing to this overall surge in steel production, the combined efforts of India's top six steel players, namely Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel and Power (JSP), AMNS India, SAIL, and RINL, have been remarkable. Their collective production stood at an impressive 41.24 MT, surpassing the 38.3 MT recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year. This concerted effort underscores the vitality and vibrancy of India's steel industry, as it continues to thrive and make significant contributions to the nation's economic growth.
