WASHINGTON, Aug 15 - A dynamic group of moderate Democrats within the U.S. House of Representatives have united to form a proactive task force centered around the fascinating realm of artificial intelligence. Their mission? To comprehensively address the question of what regulations, if any, should be applied to this cutting-edge technology.
The vibrant New Democrat Coalition enthusiastically unveiled the creation of this task force on Tuesday, emphasizing their commitment to collaborate closely with the Biden administration, corporate entities, and fellow lawmakers. Their shared goal is to craft pragmatic and bipartisan strategies that can effectively manage the potential of this burgeoning technology. Although artificial intelligence has been a part of our lives for several years, it truly captured the spotlight earlier this year with the impressive emergence of ChatGPT. The world marveled at the prowess of generative AI as it skillfully crafted human-like text using data as its palette. With a mindful approach, legislators are dedicated to harnessing its strengths while actively seeking ways to curtail potential risks, particularly concerning national security. This innovative group will be spearheaded by Representative Derek Kilmer, a dedicated Democrat hailing from the state of Washington. Assisting him as vice chairs are the capable Representatives Don Beyer of Virginia, Jeff Jackson from North Carolina, Sara Jacobs of California, Susie Lee of Nevada, and Haley Stevens from Michigan. A significant milestone arrived in July when the White House announced a collaborative effort involving AI giants like OpenAI, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), and Meta Platforms (META.O). These industry leaders voluntarily committed to adopting measures, including watermarking AI-generated content, to enhance the safety of this technology. In the Senate, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer excitedly shared plans to engage developers, executives, and experts in meaningful conversations later this year. Their insights will contribute to shaping potential legislative safeguards, a step towards a harmonious coexistence with AI advancements. Source : Reuters (Reporting by Diane Bartz)
