Europe's Shocking Move! How Its Reduced Production is Shaking Up the World's Steel Industry7/28/2023 In a lively update from the global steel industry, the World Steel Association revealed on Tuesday that there has been a slight dip in the global crude steel production by 1.1% year on year, amounting to 943.9 million metric tons for the first half of 2023. This is predominantly due to reduced outputs in both Europe and the Americas.
However, in China, the globe's premier steel producer and consumer, production experienced a mild uplift of 1.3%, totaling 535.6 metric tons between January and June, as evidenced by recent data. Interestingly, multiple steel mills across China have been directed to maintain this year's production equivalent to that of 2022, a fact attested by five individuals well-acquainted with the situation on Tuesday. Experts from Citi are predicting that China's steel production in 2023 is likely to remain stable around the 1-billion ton mark for a fourth consecutive year. Focusing on regions beyond China, Citi is optimistic about a rise in steel output in the latter half of the year, potentially boosting the total ex-China production to a hearty 847 million metric tons, a 3.6% increase from 2022. The World Steel Association shared its estimation that even under sanctions, Russia - the world's fifth-largest steel producer - saw a modest increase in production by 1%, tallying 37.5 million metric tons in the first half of 2023. However, Russia ceased sharing details of its steel output and the majority of its export and import data following its incursion into Ukraine in 2022.
