Asia's Energy Transition: Cleaner Power and Coal Challenges
The recent developments in Asian power generation reflect a complex yet significant shift towards cleaner energy, even as the reliance on coal remains a challenge. Since 2015, Asia has increased its clean electricity output and reduced its dependence on fossil fuels more rapidly than North America and Europe. The region's share of clean power, including hydro and nuclear, climbed by about 8 percentage points to 32%, while its fossil fuel share in power generation dropped by the same amount to 68%.
Despite these advancements, Asia, home to half the world’s population, still accounts for a substantial portion of global power generation emissions. Notably, power generation emissions in Asia have been rising nearly 4% annually since the Paris climate agreement, largely due to the construction of new coal-fired plants in countries like India and China to meet surging electricity demands. These developments highlight a broader global energy dilemma. While Asian nations have been effective in increasing clean energy output, their growth in emissions underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. This situation is complicated by the reluctance of some Western nations to fund the retirement of polluting plants in Asia, despite their own historical reliance on fossil fuels. For instance, Indonesia, the world’s seventh-largest coal-fired power generator, has faced challenges in moving away from coal due to funding shortages and high tariffs for renewables. Meanwhile, in a bid to meet climate goals, some Western nations are reducing financing for coal, which they see as a major threat to the environment. However, this shift has led to an increased reliance on natural gas in both Europe and North America. The share of gas in European power generation rose to 26% in 2022 from 2015, and in North America, it increased to 36%. This shift towards natural gas, often seen as a transition fuel, reflects the complex choices nations face in the global effort to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
